Girl Scouts’ Cookie Creations

Last month, I was invited to judge the Girl Scouts Cookie Creations, at the Galleria Mall in Dallas.Cookie Box Creations is a series that teams older Girl Scouts with women architects and engineers in a design contest to turn empty Girl Scout Cookie boxes into free-standing structures. The program runs from orientation in the fall through the “build” portion in the spring. I had not expected the large-scale, imaginative, and gorgeous structures that I found! One of the judging criteria involved assessing engineering skill needed to build the team’s structure. Including criteria like innovative design and engineering skill, and unpacking what that means with students or children at home seemed like an inspiring idea. How many times had I had kids build something with boxes and other materials and then given them a pat on their back for whatever structures they built. Here is a more tangible way to stretch them a little further.
